Claude Code 2.1.301+ · update it first: claude update

Claude Code terminal recorded from a real session. Typing ++ opens the placeholder list; Up twice selects ++r and Tab inserts it. With the caret on ++r the band above the prompt shows the lines Claude receives in bold bright text, the token ++r in bold blue and the labels dim; with the caret off, the compact band lists it, its actions underlined. Enter sends and Claude reviews a one-line README fix. /placeholders global add ++db: always use the staging DB asks one question, Save as drafted, and saves ~/.claude/placeholders/db.md. Typing ++ again, one Up selects ++db; after ++r and ++m are typed, the caret on ++m shows its text cut to fit, ending in ... 16 more lines · whole text: /placeholders show ++m or ++m? alone [Enter], with /placeholders show ++m and ++m? underlined.
Real Claude Code 2.1.301 screens, sped up in places. Pick ++r with ↑ and ⇥; the caret on it shows the lines Claude receives, ⏎ sends. /placeholders global add ++db saves your own after one question.

Type this, get that

TypeGet
++r Two-phase review: every change checked, every finding double-checked.
++m Manager mode: Claude delegates and never codes in the main context. Plan mode adds a plan part.
++a Architecture first: design goes to expert agents before code.
+++ Anti-drift cron, in every mode: outside plan mode Claude creates one cron for the current task now; in plan mode it plans the cron as a step.
++/ what does ++r do? Sent exactly as typed: no placeholder in the message expands. ++\ works too.

Plus ++rr, see the docs

DoSee
caret on ++r Up to 15 rows of what Claude receives, above the prompt. Plain text is sent; dim labels are not. A cut names the command that prints the rest.
++r? then Enter twice Alone in the message. The first Enter fills /placeholders show ++r and sends nothing; the second prints the whole text in the chat, no Claude turn.
ctrl+o Not there: the transcript shows your prompt and the answer only.
Claude Code terminal recorded from a real session. With ++m typed, the caret on it shows the lines Claude receives in bold bright text, cut to fit with ... 16 more lines · whole text: /placeholders show ++m or ++m? alone [Enter], both actions underlined, then not sent now · plan mode adds 18 lines in teal, Claude Code's plan-mode colour. Typing ? makes ++m?; Enter fills the box with /placeholders show ++m and a notice says it was not sent to Claude; Enter again prints the whole ++m text, plan-mode part included, in the chat without a Claude turn. Scrolled up, the output starts with ++m · full text as sent.
Real Claude Code 2.1.301 screens. Caret on ++m: the band shows what Claude receives, cut to fit. Type ?, then ⏎: the box gets /placeholders show ++m, nothing is sent. ⏎ again: the whole text is printed in the chat, no Claude turn.
/placeholders

Commands, or plain words

TypeGet
/placeholders Status: every ++name, where it lives, how to use it.
/placeholders list Every placeholder with its full text, plan-mode parts included.
/placeholders show ++r ++m The exact text at once, no Claude turn. Plain words work: show me ++m and ++r, покажи ++r.
/placeholders help The full help, no Claude turn, with links to the docs.
/placeholders global add ++db: use the staging DB Claude drafts it and asks once: Save ++db as drafted? Saved to ~/.claude/placeholders/db.md, for all projects. Change and remove the same way, in any language.
/placeholders project add ++lint: run the linter first Only this project, and it wins over global. With no global or project word, your words decide, else the same dialog asks where (Global first).

Read it with no keys

The caret on a token shows what Claude receives, above the prompt. After Tab or Enter on a name, a history recall or an undo, the band shows at once.

Global or per project

Plain files: ~/.claude/placeholders for all projects, .claude/placeholders for one.

Two file kinds

<name>.md is sent in every mode; an optional <name>.plan.md adds its text in plan mode. ++m and +++ have one: the band marks plan + and plan mode adds: in Claude Code's plan-mode colour. Old plan-only, not-plan and replace files still load, with one status warning.
